Bafana bastyle remain top spot

Samukele Manzini

A first half brace from Thabang Mothogwane, ensured log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, remain unbeaten in the Safa/Tshwane under 17 champion’s league. Sundowns registered their fifth consecutive win of the campaign on Saturday at the Giant stadium, over Westend Cyclones.
Sundowns were on the offensive as early as the 3rd minute. Avela Cezu’s free-kick forced a save from Cyclones’ Pitsi Madikana. Minutes later Downs’ Percy Tau’s thunderous free-kick did beat Madikana but not the upright.
Downs kept possession, controlled the match and did not allow Cyclones space to play. With Downs attacking from all cylinders, Cyclones’ defence defended deep but stood firm, restricting Downs to shooting from outside the box. Cyclones had one shot at goal compare to Downs’ three after 25 minutes. Cyclones striker, Thulani Diseko, was a lone striker upfront, and did not have a shot at goal, the whole match.
Against the run of play, Mothogwane ‘solo run in the 33rd minute gave Downs a 1 nil lead. Two minutes later the striker completed his brace.
Despite being two players down, in the 2nd half, after the pair of Relefilwe Mokepetla and Avela Cezu were sent off, for reiteration and a tackle from behind respectively, Downs kept on attacking but were not able to score more goals. The game ended 2-0 in favour of the Mamelodi side.
Downs coach Spagnetti Nare was more disappointed at the field of play than at his boys, for not scoring more goals against a defensive team that had no intentions of attacking. ‘‘We were struggling to play our normal, carpet football in such a field, that is why we missed so many chances’’.
